Teaching Resources

I have used the 911 Pretend and Play Teaching Telephone shown below in my classroom for several years and it's a fantastic teaching tool!  All of my students learn how to call 911 and what to say.  This phone allows you to program your own voice into it and create any type of message you like.  The phone comes pre-programmed the following: "911, what is your emergency?" so when the children dial 911 correctly this is what they hear.  They then have to respond by stating what type of emergency they have.  We take turns acting out emergencies and having different students call 911.   I also use this phone in December, click HERE to find out how!

Never Play With Matches

(tune: Where is Thumbkin?)

Never, ever play with matches,

For if you do,

For if you do,

You might burn your fingers.

You might burn your fingers.

That won't do!

That won't do!

9-1-1

(tune: 3 Blind Mice)

9-1-1, 9-1-1

Help's on the way, help's on the way,

If I need help, I know what to do.

I can call the police and the firemen too,

It makes me feel safe to know what to do.

9-1-1, 9-1-1

Siren Game

Setting: Small Group, Literacy Centers

Art Activities

Activity Instructions

Flames

Materials: orange and yellow fingerpaint, fingerpaint paper, brown construction paper.

Have the students fingerpaint with orange and yellow fingerpaint on fingerpaint paper.  When dry, cut the papers into the shape of flames and glue onto black paper.  Add a few brown construction paper rectangles to make logs under the campfire.

Shape Fire Truck

Materials: red and white construction paper, glue, crayons.

Have the students cut red rectangles, and red squares to make the truck.  Glue the shapes on white construction paper and have the students add the ladder, hose, siren, wheels, and other features with crayons.

Never Play With Matches

Materials: red, orange, and yellow paint, construction paper, marble or golf ball, Xerox copies of a match, black marker, paint tray or cardboard box.

Xerox a picture of a match on an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper for each student (Microsoft clip gallery).  Lay the paper in the bottom of a painting tray or cardboard box.  Dip the marble or golf ball into the paint and place in the box on top of the paper.  Have the student tip the box back and forth so the marble rolls the paint across the paper.  When dry, cut around the picture of the match in a circle.  With a marker add a horizontal black line across the picture to make the international "No" symbol.  These look great on a bulletin board during fire safety month.

Fire Hat

Materials: regular size paper plates, red crayons, Xerox copy of a badge or a badge sticker, scissors.

Have each student color a paper plate red with a crayon.  Next, cut out the inside of the plate in a semi-circle with your scissors leaving the outer ridged edge for the hat band.  Pop up the semi-circle in the middle of the hat, add the badge to the front, and you have an instant fire hat!

Hot/Not Hot

Materials: Microsoft clip-art, scissors, red and blue construction paper, glue

Give the children a sheet with clip art of objects that are hot or not hot.  Have the students cut and glue their pictures to the appropriate colored paper- red for hot and blue for not hot.
